The Algonac/Clay Historical Society
was formed in 1991 by combining the former Algonac Boating and Historical
group and the Clay Township Historical Society. It is a non-profit
organization dedicated to preserving the history of the area.
The Society is funded by donations and fund raising events. The Township
of Clay and the City of Algonac have been very supportive by donating
funds to special projects. At present the Society has two museums.
A hard working group of local volunteers keeps the museums operating
by donating many hours for planning exhibits, cataloging the donations,
preserving the artifacts, taking care of maintenance and manning the
museum.
Goals of the organization:
To preserve local history and to provide educational opportunities
for all segments of the community.
Archives and Artifacts:
Our archives include Algonac's boat building heritage featuring Chris-Craft,
Gar Wood and the many other local boat builders. Over 10,000 artifacts
also features local history, business, industry, schools, churches
and the military.
